In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
In the beginning God spoke all things into existence. His Word did what it said (Genesis 1:3, 6-7, 9, 11, 14-15, 20-21, 24, etc.). For His Word is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). The scalpel that cuts into your soul dissecting the secret thoughts of your heart (Hebrews 4:12) and creating faith (Romans 10:13-17) where before His Word came there was none.
And thus it was with this official. He’d heard this Word. He believed this Word. He came to this Word made flesh seeking life for his son (John 1:1-4, 14).
And the Word rebuffs him. Well not really him, but those who seek and desire signs, who will not believe if not given a sign, saying, “You—plural, not singular, not this man right in front of Him, but people in general—YOU will not believe unless you see a sign.” (John 4:48) But for the believer in this Word there is no sign that needs to be seen. For the sign is that your unbelieving heart has been overcome. Replaced with a believing heart. That is the sign of this Word’s power.
This man was not seeking a sign so that he’d believe. But believing the Word about Jesus he came to the One who does signs so that believing in Him we might have life in His name. (John 20:30-31) He came so that his son might have life in the name of Jesus.
So when the Word made flesh said, “Go, your son will live,” in faith he went. For the miracle of faith was already given to him by the power of this wonder working Word.
Well this 2nd sign Jesus did so that we might have life in His name occurred at 7th hour of day. The Word made flesh spoke life into the official’s son at noon time. At the hour of rest and sustenance. This is when the official came to our Lord. (John 4:52-53) Healing came over the life giving rest and refreshment of food supplied by our God for our good (Psalm 145:15-16). His Word of rest and life is spoken healing the official’s son while bodies are being invigorated by food and souls refreshed by bread of life who gives life to world (John 6:33, 35, 41, 48).
And what happened starting from that hour? The son lived. The whole house believed. The whole household was familied into God’s family. At the hour of food and rest they were faith-ed and fellowshipped into Christ Jesus by the Word which worked this miraculous sign.
Here at His table we receive His Word connected to bread and wine. A sign. A miracle of His gracious life-giving Word. By faith we receive what He promises. His body and blood in which is His life. And He sends us to our homes with the words, “Depart in peace,” and the promise that we will live with Him forever. Members of His royal family. Children of heavenly Father. Unto the ages of ages.
In +Jesus’ name, Amen.
