People the world over think of God like genie in a bottle. Rub him just the right way and get your magic wishes. Pray the right way. Do the right actions. Or believe the right things and you can get goodies from God. This is patently false.

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Death and taxes. It’s the mantra of cynical people who think that nothing in the universe is true, lasting, or unchanging except these two burdensome constants. But they leave one most necessary constant out: God. God is the source of all things. He is the first cause. He is the eternal unmoved mover. It is from Him that all authority in heaven and earth derives. He sets up governments. He gives them authority to maintain peace and order in certain regions, over certain peoples or language groups. He gives them authority to manage the civil affairs of the world. The power He puts in their hands is that of justice, the sword of vengeance. It is the power to use force to make the unwilling comply with what is good, right, and just. If we are wise we submit to these authorities and give them their due, be that taxes, honour, or doing your civic duty in times of war, or times of election, etc. For these governing authorities are God’s gift to us to keep order on earth so that all things can proceed as they ought. God the Father, the creator of heaven and earth is the source of all this. He is the Father. From Him comes all authority. He set up this system. We pray that in a sinful, fallen world He upholds those in authority so that might be a blessing to those under them as He has designed.

Everything is upside down in this parable. People do not turn down a king’s invitation. If you had been invited to Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton wouldn’t you have gone? To be so honoured by our queen is a great privilege. Any ladies who were invited would probably break the bank to get one of those funny hats that all the ladies wore; whereas upon receiving such an invitation men would probably have let their wives spend ridiculous amounts of money to be properly outfitted for such an occasion. And because of the great honour, if you turned down such an invitation people at home would think you crazy and mock you openly in the local media!

Many are the afflictions of the righteous. Day by day we see them. Night by night we suffer and mourn them. And so we pray, “Give peace, O Lord, to those who wait on You.” For many are our afflictions, “Hear our prayer [just as You’ve promised].”

Look carefully at how you walk. What’s your walk like? Are you walking the road of life as a Christian? As one who is wise or one who is unwise? The Apostle Paul says in order to be wise you should avoid drunkenness because drunkenness leads to unthinkingness, to your brain going right out the window and doing things you’d never do if you were in your right mind. But drunkenness isn’t the only time we get unthinking is it?

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Way back on Mt. Sinai who gave Moses the Law? God did. Now in Jesus’ day, a lawyer, an expert of the Law, in what God said, tested our Lord. “What’s the greatest Law?” he said. Our Lord answers with flying colours, “You will love Lord your God completely.” And then He adds to it, “And a second is like it, ‘You will love your neighbour as yourself.” He gives out the Law just as He did on Mt. Sinai. And all of what Moses said and everything of what the prophets said hangs on, depends on, these two laws of love.
