Readings: Isaiah 29:17-24; 2 Corinthians 3:4-11; Mark 7:31-37

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

“In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.” Thus saith the Lord. (Isaiah 29:18)

And so the Lord stood upon the earth—the word of God made flesh (John 1:14), the book of life (Revelation 20:12) Himself, the New Testament in His blood (Luke 22:20), whose glory surpasses and is so much greater than the Old Covenant (2 Corinthians 3:9-11)—and blew open the ears of a deaf man so that he heard. The Word of God was stuffed into his ear, took hold of his tongue, sprinkling him with His own spittle, baptizing him, and washing away all his guilt—and he was opened. (Mark 7:33-35)

Isaiah 29:17-24
2 Corinthians 3:4-11
Mark 7:31-37

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Our Lord is in Gentile territory.  He left the geographical borders of Israel some days ago, going north into modern day Lebanon.  There He tussled with a woman whom He called a dog yet healed her daughter.  From there He intentionally skirts his own countrymen staying on the wrong side of the Sea of Galilee, staying in Gentile territory where they bring a deaf mute to Him.  After healing him next He will miraculously feed 4000 of these heathen.  But that’s the thing.  Are they heathen?  “Heathen” has become a derogatory term to us, meaning “uncultured,” or “uncivilized.”  But basically it means someone who does not believe your religion.  These Gentiles are not born Jews.  But are they unbelievers?  Do they believe in Jesus?  They seem to know He has divine power?  Whether they realize it they recognize His status as God with their final statement, “He has done all things well.”  When the Lord God created the world, He looked at what He made and said, “It is good.”  He did it very well.

Isaiah 29:17-24
2 Corinthians 3:4-11
Mark 7:31-37

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Our Lord thrust his finger in the ear of the deaf man, poking through the blockage as it were.  He grabbed hold of the man’s tongue, yanking it out of his mouth.  He groaned in deep compassion, feeling the man’s suffering, and really the suffering of His whole creation which He had come to earth to save.  But right now He was focussed on this one little corner.  This man.  And how the impacts of sin at work in every single one of us had caused this man to be cut off, isolated, unable to hear, hardly able to speak.  There were people all around him but so little communication going on.  No one was able to know His thoughts, nor able to communicate with him except by touch, whether harsh or gentle.
