Christmas Fairy Tales—Christmas Eve

Readings: Isaiah 9:2-7; Titus 2:11-14; Luke 2:1-20

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

The birth of this most important baby has become somewhat fairytale like to us. The Christmas Gospel reading we heard tonight is an historical account. It contains all the necessary information to situate it in the realm of fact, not fiction. Yet, with all our love that we have for Christmas, with our favourite shows, and carols, and obsession with shopping, Christmas has become more myth than fact for us. Maybe you even heard Linus' voice as that Gospel account was read.

The Death of Temptation—The Purification of Mary and the Presentation of Our Lord

Readings: 1 Samuel 1:21-28; Hebrews 2:14-18; Luke 2:22-32

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Jesus, the Christ, belongs to God.  He is begotten of the Father from all eternity.  He was conceived of the Holy Spirit.  He is of one substance with the Father.  But in His suffering on your behalf He belongs to you.  For in those six hours on the cross He suffered physically for your sins and spiritually through temptation.  There, then, He was tempted like no other has been.  He was tempted to get down from the cross, to not drink the cup of God’s wrath being poured out on Him, to not be the saving Son of God.  Because of these extreme temptations—the same temptations Satan had set before Him during His 40 days of fasting in wilderness after His Baptism—He understands temptation for He has suffered it.  He is yours in this temptation.  For He can be merciful to you by aiding you, by understanding your temptations, by forgiving you when you fall to them.

God's Timing---1st Sunday in Christmas

Readings: Isaiah 11:1-5; Galatians 4:1-7; Luke 2:22-40

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under Law, to redeem those under the Law (Galatians 4:4-5).  God’s timing is perfect.  It is true.  It is an arrow that hit the bullseye from thousands of years out.  All of time revolves around this moment.  All eternity praises this moment and depends on this moment when in the fullness of time God sent forth His Son.  Why did He do it?  To redeem you.  To buy you back from sin.  To be the saviour of God’s fallen children and of all creation.

Laid on a Stone Cold Slab---Christmas Eve

Readings: Isaiah 9:2-7; Titus 2:11-14; Luke 2:1-20

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

In Bethlehem, which means house of bread, our Saviour was born.  It was an agriculturally rich area, which fed the surrounding regions.  With His birth it became a spiritually rich spot which would feed the world.  He was laid in a manger. A food trough.  Such troughs in that area were made of stone.  He was laid out on a slab.  An infant teaming with life whose clothe wrapped body foreshadowed His life’s purpose.  To be wrapped in cloth and laid on a stone cold slab for the sins of the world.

The Nativity of Our Lord---Christmas Eve

Isaiah 9:2-7
Titus 2:11-14
Luke 2:1-20

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
In Jesus Christ a great prince has been born!  His birth has brought on the earth an age of wisdom; the wisdom of God the Father who has reconciled the world to Himself through this prince.  An era where the age old might-is-right realities have been tempered with by His Kingdom’s contention that what is right has might.  An age where at times on earth, and especially within His own kingdom, peace, order and good government are a reality.  For this prince is the Mighty God!  This prince’s birth fathered a new age, a new kingdom, an age and rule of light not darkness; an age of divine justice tempered by the righteousness of mercy.  Though His kingdom is non-geographical, for it consists of individuals of every tribe, nation, and language throughout the world, nonetheless it has increased and expanded in every age spreading His peace unto the very corners of the earth.  Even to the dark secret streets of your own soul.  To wherever meek souls will receive Him still.

A Mummy in a Manger---Christmas Eve

Isaiah 9:2-7
Titus 2:11-14
Luke 2:1-20

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
The peace of God laid in a food distribution device.  That is the sign of God’s eternal cease-fire on the sin of man.  A baby, wrapped as though dead, like a mummy in grave clothes.  Laid out to be eaten.  It’s an appalling thought.  It is God’s way.
