Readings: Genesis 14:8-23; Hebrews 7:1-10; John 8:53-58

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today we hear of Abram, leader of a crack commando unit, who in the middle of the night dawned their night vision goggles and took out the combined forces of 4 great kings. All to rescue his nephew Lot. In faith Lot came with Uncle Abram from their home land for his own father was dead. Abram was likely a father to him after his father died. But let us assume that Lot heard the call unto faith that the Holy Spirit placed on Abram (Gen. 12:1-3; 2 Pet. 2:6-9), so that Lot followed Abram to the land promised to Abram. (Gen. 12:4) However, once in the land, Lot followed after the desires of the flesh. Both men’s herds grew too big to remain together. (Gen. 13:5-7) So Abram said to Lot, “Do you want over here or over there?” (Gen. 13:8-9) And Lot saw the greener grass on one side and said, “I’ll take this way.” (Gen. 13:10-11) And so for want of greener grass he got ensnared in the wickedness of the cities of that area: Sodom and Gomorrah. (Gen. 13:12-13) When those cities rebelled against their ruling king and were thus attacked by their ruler and his allies, they weren’t up to the task. They were crushed and Lot was taken captive. (Gen. 14:1-7)

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Another year rolls around. Another Reformation Day. The red colour is fun. But does the Reformation still matter? Does anyone really care? When churches are emptying out in Europe and North America why are you Lutherans still doing your own thing, being so rigourous on the Bible, the Bible, the Bible? Or more specifically: the Gospel, the Gospel, the Gospel?

Judica: Victorious Vindication—5th Sunday in Lent

Introit: Psalm 43:3-5; antiphon: Psalm 43:1-2a
Readings: Genesis 22:1-14; Psalm 43 (antiphon: v.5); Hebrews 9:11-15; John 8:42-59

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Moments before our Gospel reading many Jews believe in Jesus as He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) But breathes later they are rejecting Him. He, the Light of men, was judged by those who did not believe in Him. They did not trust in Him. They trusted in themselves. That’s the one thing God can not stand: self-love or self-trust. For you on your own apart from God are sinful. You can not accomplish any good thing with reference to God. In terms of your neighbour on this side of heaven where intentions, love, and faith matter less than what is actually done, yes, you can choose good, whether your heart truly wills it or not. But before God—where your faith, love and trust matter, for He knows and judges the secret heart—you can do no good.

This is the fifth in a series about the Divine Service.

Part 1: Confession & Absolution
Part 2: the "Kyrie Eleison"
Part 3: the "Gloria in Excelsis"
Part 4: the "Creed"
Part 5: the "Sanctus"
Part 6: the "Agnus Dei"
Genesis 22:1-14
Hebrews 9:11-15
John 8:42-59

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
The high points of the Divine Service all point to Jesus as your saviour, the source of life and salvation.  In the preparatory part of the Service in the Confession and Absolution we repent, and ask for forgiveness, and Our Lord proclaims you forgiven.  In the Service of the Word in the Kyrie we call out to Him for mercy, which in faith we know we will get.  In the Gloria we proclaim with the angels that God’s glory, which is to have mercy, has come in our flesh to save us.  In the Creed we confess who He is, which shapes us and our identity through His having mercy on us, reminding us that we are no longer objects of wrath, but objects of affection, sought after, loved, and saved through the work of each person of the Triune God.  In the Service of the Sacrament in the Sanctus we join with the song the angels sing in the heavenly throne room to proclaim that our Triune God is holy, and the Sanctus anticipating next week, Palm Sunday, goes on to proclaim that He comes to us to impart His holiness to us.

Revelation 14:6-8
Romans 3:19-28
John 8:31-36

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
You are free indeed.  It may not feel like it.  For your sin is still battling in you.  It still wants to make you do what you don’t want to.  It was drowned in your Baptism but like some zombie, or undead creature from a horror movie series it keeps coming back, rising again, rearing its gruesome head.  You have to stake it in the heart, shoot it in the head, crush the head of that ancient serpent tempting you, waging warfare inside you.

Genesis 22:1-14
Hebrews 9:11-15
John 8:42-59

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Pray dear friends.  Pray.  Our Lord He did not come to bring peace but a sword.  This does not mean He advocates violence, except against Himself, but He brings a sword into the midst of your life—His Word.  His Word divides houses, families, husband and wife against each other.  For he who hears His Word and believes is divided from he who does not believe.  So pray, pray, pray.  For those who do not believe don’t because they are of their father—the murderer, the father of lies who speaks his own language, a language of falsehood, half truths, and outright deceit.   And his desire is to kill, to destroy, to enslave all people to himself and send you and your loved ones to hell.

You Are a Slave! - Reformation Day (observed)

Revelation 14:6-7
Romans 3:19-28
John 8:31-36

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
You are a slave.  A slave to sin.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve been set free from sin by the blood of Christ.  Sin is still in you.  It still rears its ugly head.  So in that sense you are a slave to it, until that final day when having abided in Christ Jesus, you will be truly released from this slavery.
