Readings: Exodus 16:2-35; 17:1-7; Psalm 78:12-20, 23-28, 32-35
(antiphon: v. 35)
; 1 Corinthians 10:2-4; John 6:31-35

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Newly freed from slavery, on the move for about month, and running out of food the Israelites complain. (Exod. 16:1-3) So the Lord rained down meat for supper and bread for breakfast. (Exod. 16:8, 11-14) Sweet bread that tasted like honey. (Exod. 16:31) Miraculous bread that appeared when the dew burned off in the light of day, when the Lord appeared in the cloud (Exod. 16:10), when the sun burst upon the white stuff covering ground like snow. (Exod. 16:13-14) It must have radiated just like fresh snow when the sun bursts through the clouds, increasing the glory of Lord as the stuff on the ground shone with heavenly light. And they said, “What is it?”—“Manna?” in their language. And never ones to understate the obvious, or maybe they were folks with a deep sense of humour, they called it that throughout the 40 years that they ate it. Manna—What is it? And the answer to that question is important: “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.” (Exod. 16:15) Bread from heaven, bread of life, given by the Lord, the second person of the Trinity, who is the living bread from heaven. That bread that when eaten gives eternal life. (John 6:47-51)

Laetere: Delightful Deliciousness—4th Sunday in Lent

Introit: Psalm 122:1-2, 6, 8; antiphon: Isaiah 66:10a, 11a
Readings: Exodus 16:2-21; Acts 2:41-47; John 6:1-15

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

The Passover, the annual meal of the Jews, was at hand and Jesus the Good Shepherd makes His flock lie down in green pastures, and feeds them, restoring their soul. It is an impressive meal. More than two thirds of your annual salary couldn’t have provided enough food for that crowd. And  besides what bakery anywhere ever has food for thousands on hand? Food in abundance given by God, and they were fed to the full. Completely satisfied. And still there was lots left over. Twelve baskets full from five loaves and two fish. This food will continue to provide for Christ’s twelve disciples. Just as His Supper is an unending source of the bread of heaven for His Church while on earth.

This is the fourth in a series about the Divine Service.

Part 1: Confession & Absolution
Part 2: the "Kyrie Eleison"
Part 3: the "Gloria in Excelsis"
Part 4: the "Creed"
Part 5: the "Sanctus"
Part 6: the "Agnus Dei"
Exodus 16:2-21
Acts 2:41-47
John 6:1-15

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
The Passover was at hand.  So the Good Shepherd feeds His flock of over 5000 in the grassy pasture land.  By this He foreshadowed that the Good Shepherd is the true Passover Lamb who feeds us with His own body and blood and takes away the sins of the world.

This event in the life of Our Lord shows that He is the God who created all and has power over the universe, even over the laws of physics.  This event parallels God’s shepherding and leading and miraculously feeding His people day by day with bread from heaven during Moses’ time.  This event shows that He is the same God.  The people around Our Lord realized He must be the Prophet that Moses talked about: the One who was to come, who would be greater than Moses, for He would be the Messiah, the Saviour, God’s own Son.

God promises right in the midst of promising salvation to also provide for those He saves: "I will bless [the Church’s] provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread." (Psalm 132:15)  And true to His Word down through  the ages the Lord has provided abundant salvation, and even food for the poor again and again.
