Readings: Numbers 21:4-9; James 1:22-27; John 16:23-33

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

On the night in which Christ our Lord was betrayed He said, “In that day—the day of My resurrection—you will ask nothing of me. There will be no need for clarification on what I’ve said, for then you will understand all I have taught you. Then you will get that My work is to rescue the Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve from sin and death. My resurrection will make My whole life make sense. My work will be obvious. The destruction of death. Victory for those caught in sin and the fear of death. My resurrection will make your urgent requests, your prayers, to the Father in My name effective. What you request on behalf of Me will be done by my Father.” And then in the next chapter, John 17, He tells them and us what to pray on His behalf, in His name, trusting in Him. That Christians be one (John 17:11, 22-23), united in the belief that Jesus came to die for their sins. That His life, death and resurrection defeated sin and death and give life eternal in His name, in His Kingdom, with His Father.

Readings: Isaiah 12:1-6; James 1:16-21; John 16:5-15

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

It is of use to you that Jesus went away. A great and holy use. Beneficial in every way. For now that our Lord is heaven at the right hand of the Father ruling all things on His behalf He has sent His Holy Spirit into the earth, specifically into the hearts of mankind through the preaching of His Word and the distribution of His Sacraments. Why is this Helper of such great use to you? Because “I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.” (Luther's Small Catechism: Explanation to the Third Article of the Creed)

Readings: Isaiah 40:25-31; 1 Peter 2:11-20; John 16:16-22

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

God silences evil-doers by goodness. He shames those who are wicked by the suffering of the righteous. Sometimes you will be privileged to see it in your own life after you have suffered for the name of Jesus and the sake of what is right. You will be so blessed as to witness the repentance of those who have wronged you. But sadly that is rare. Your sorrow becoming joy may not happen on this side of eternity. But it will happen. In the resurrection of the dead when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:9-11). The books will be opened (Revelation 20:12). Wicked hearts will be revealed. Then those who did evil without repentance will be put to shame by those who suffered at their hands for their faith in Christ. They will shamed by seeing the object of their scorn being exalted by Christ Jesus, and their own high state being brought down to the depths of hell.

“You must be doers of the word and not hearers only,” says James the brother of Our Lord.  Many a person has tried to use this verse to place James in opposition to His own brother and to Our Lord’s Apostle, Paul, as if being a hearer or a doer of the Word are different things.

John 16:16-20

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!  Alleluia

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
When the Father of all is present time stretches.  Our Lord says He will be gone in a little while, and be back in a little while because He is going to the Father.  But with the Father time seems to warp because He is the source of everything.  He is the reason you exist.  He is the joy of existence.  Without Him life is hell, passing alternately so fast you grieve how little time you have and so slow you wish your end would come sooner.  But with Him time is irrelevant.  It passes but you don’t care.  It is enjoyable for He is there.  It is what you were made for.  Time does not matter for He is the Lord of time.  Not merely a timelord like the popular British tv show but THE LORD of time itself.  The Lord of all.  He holds all in His hands.  He controls all.  He created and delights in all.  He has as much time and matter as He needs.  And He uses it as it should be used.  So that in all things it is all joy, love, peace, and bliss with Him.  Not fear, loathing, anger, hatred, or boredom which is so common here below.

Everybody prays. Even atheists. You’ve heard it said there are no atheists in foxholes. That maxim is true, for when tragedy strikes even atheists find themselves praying to some god. Everybody prays for we all instinctively know the law and thus know our sinfulness. The problem with our prayers is that they are usually based on the idea that if I pray hard enough, long enough, are sincere enough, bargain with God in just the right way, or get the formula right then God will listen and give me what I want. Even Christians fall into this trap. Many of us Christians don’t pay attention to what we pray, sometimes praying for that which is selfish or self-serving, and then throw on the tag-line “in Jesus’ name, Amen” as if that somehow means that God will have to answer every prayer we utter with exactly what we want.

Taking Rebukes---5th Sunday of Easter--Cantate

Isaiah 12:1-6
James 1:16-21
John 16:5-15

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
It is to your benefit that Our Lord has left earth and that you no longer see Him.  I heard one of you say once that it seems so lonely to think of our Lord ascending into heaven, leaving us behind, but He Himself assures us before it happens that it is to the disciples benefit and thus to our benefit.  Why?  Because the Lord will send the Helper.  If He remained, He couldn’t send His Spirit.  You wouldn’t have that Helper who lives in us.  For Our Lord would remain here below and the Lord would need to stay in one place.  Not because He does not have the power to be everywhere, but because it drive us insane if He appeared beside each of us and you would just have talked to Him here, and then you turn there and see Him there.  So for our sake He leaves so that He can give His Spirit to all who are baptized.  Thus, He is not only beside us, but actually in all who are His!  So His leaving is to our benefit.

Isaiah 40:25-31

John 16:16-22

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Birth.  That miracle of life brought forth in the midst of pain, suffering, and blood.  These days birth seems relatively safe.  There is a low infant mortality rate and a low rate of serious problems for mothers.   But any father who has witnessed the pain, the suffering, the agony that bringing a human being into the world causes his wife is prone to think, “How could I have done this to my wife, the woman I love?”  For this suffering is indeed the curse of sin given in the beginning.  Pain in child bearing.  Man’s sin causes his wife suffering.
