Readings: Genesis 15:1-6; 1 John 4:16-21; Luke 16:19-31

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today the family of God got a little bigger with the Holy Baptism of Krystin. God’s family is a great, big, huge family with people from every tribe, nation, and language under the sun—all under the fatherhood of God. And our joy increases to see new souls added to God’s family. We like God’s family being big. But think about our society, and your own thoughts as a member of this society. Our society doesn’t like big families anymore. And you’ve found yourself thinking it too: “Big families are scary.” We are so convinced of this that nowadays three kids is considered a huge family. And if someone dares to go beyond three you yourself have probably thought, “You know how this works right? Don’t you know where babies come from?” Or, “Don’t you like sleep?” And the real clincher, “Don’t you like money?”

Readings: Isaiah 6:1-7; Romans 11:33-36; John 3:1-17

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Flesh gives birth to flesh. Spirit gives birth to spirit (John 3:6). The two have nothing to do with each other. For one can’t come from the other. Flesh doesn’t give birth to spirit and spirit doesn’t create flesh. The only point of contact for the two opposites is you. For you, dear Christian, are two. A “flesh you”. And a “spirit you”. One is born from below, from the flesh of your mother and father. And one is born from above, from the new birth of water and the Spirit (John 3:3-5). But this creates a dilemma. Which one is really you? Satan would have you believe that the true you is “flesh you”. Satan and the world try to nurture “flesh you”, encourage it, give it strength. The Triune God, from whom you have been given a new “spirit you”, is declaring to you that the true you is God’s you—the you given life from His Son as His Spirit was poured into you giving the eternal life of God to you, a new life born of God with the Father.

Look up on the banners. What do you see on the left side? A descending dove for the Holy Spirit who came down at Jesus’ baptism. And on the right side? Fire. The fire of the Spirit descending from heaven on Pentecost. As a kid I would hear that story and think, “Cool.” As an adult I wondered, “Why fire?”

Readings: Ezekiel 36:22-28; Psalm 51:1-12; 1 Peter 4:7-11; John 15:26-16:4

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

There is suffering that goes with being a Christian. Your family, your friends, society, even fellow church members will persecute you if you are too into Jesus. If you wish to live according to Biblical standards; if you expect your own family as you raise them, or encourage your own family once they are grown, to live as the Christians they were baptized to be you will suffer. You’ve all told me about those struggles. About not wanting to alienate children. About not pushing too hard. And there is wisdom in not pushing too hard (Ephesians 6:4). But you all know that you’ve also failed to speak when you should have. That you’re kids attitudes, or family members’ attitudes, or friends’ attitudes have effected your attitudes, so that you do not live your faith as you yourself know you should. Repent.
