1 Kings 19:11-21
1 Corinthians 1:18-25
Luke 5:1-11

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
“I believe that I can not by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.” (From Luther’s Small Catechism, Explanation of the Third Article of the Creed)

Peter by his own reason and strength could not believe in Jesus Christ.  His common sense, his years of experience told him: the night is over.  The fish are not to be found. This rabbi knows nothing about fishing.  His own reason said, “No,” to the Lord’s command.  Did you hear a tone of frustration or exasperation in Peter’s response?  Nonetheless, the Holy Spirit called Peter by the Gospel through Our Lord’s preaching.  It was the Holy Spirit which overcame his worldly wisdom.  In faith after the exasperation Peter added, “But at your word I will do it.”

Genesis 50:15-21
Romans 8:18-23
Luke 6:36-42

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Logs and specks.  Both are made of wood.  Both hurt your eye.  But the size definitely makes a difference.  A speck of dust can cause your eye to water, hurt, and blur your vision.  A log blocks vision all together.  In fact, it would totally block your face.  If I had a log in my eye how could I see anything clearly let alone the speck in your eye?

Micah 7:18-20
1 Peter 5:6-11
Luke 15

In the name of Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

God is not like us.  He knowingly and intentionally makes bad investments.  He purchases and invests in you and me who go off on our own, who lose ourselves in the world and its desires, who tell our Father, “I want all the good stuff you have for me, but I want nothing to do with You.”

Proverbs 9:1-10
1 John 3:13-18
Luke 14:15-24

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Confirmands, today you will taste the wine of the Sacrament of the Altar for the first time.  For some of you, depending on your family attitudes and habits, this is the first time you have tasted wine, for others may have tasted it before, maybe even drunk regularly at your family table.  Most of you will cringe for wine is strong drink.  Yet there is a wisdom in wine.  There is age and maturity in wine.  To enjoy wine is to enjoy the finer things of life.  It is to sit and have fellowship with others.  Wine is a social drink.  You open a bottle and share it with someone else.  To drink a bottle on your own in one sitting may indicate that you have a problem.  You might say this is the wisdom of wine.  That wine is for fellowship and camaraderie; it is for celebrating the good time and it and those you gather with are a consolation in life’s bad times.

Genesis 15:1-6
1 John 4:16-21
Luke 16:19-31

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
We are a nation of wimps.  We have lost our stomachs.  We no longer have the strength of our own convictions.  As a society, and specially as the Christian Church who know better than our society, we claim to believe certain things to be true, right, good, and therefore other things to be untrue, wrong, and evil.  But after giving lip service to what we believe we turn around and forget.  We turn a blind eye.  We ignore.  We pretend we do not see the injustice, the wrong, the evil being done.  Or maybe we see it plain as day, but our consciences have gotten so hardened that our own actions and those of our society do not even register with us as wrong anymore!
