1 Samuel 17:40-51 2 Corinthians 6:1-10 Matthew 4:1-11 In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. History looms large. Your personal history, your story, casts a big shadow, both its joys and woes define you. How many times do we retell our stories, again and again? We define ourselves by them. When you get to know someone you want to spend your life with or some new bosom buddy you tell them your story. You invite them into it. They become intertwined with it. Your history looms large over you. And if there are horrible things in our past it is a giant who towers over you, casting a horrific shadow over everything else in your life.

1 Samuel 16:1-13 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 Luke 18:31-43 In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. St. Paul shows us a more excellent way. The way of love. The way of Jesus. For if Our Lord should have all these gifts—supernatural tongues, prophecy, knowledge, faith—but has not love they would profit Him nothing. He would be powerful and impressive, but no saviour. For in love for God His Father and for us fallen men He perfectly loved in all He did according to His Father’s most rigorous standards: the Holy Ten Commandments. Loving God and loving neighbour. Without fail. Till the very end.
Isaiah 55:10-13 Hebrews 4:9-13 Luke 8:4-15 In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Men are deaf. Which is to say, they don’t listen. He who has ears to hear let Him hear. Sure, men have ears. Sure, sounds go in and are processed by the nerves and eventually filter through to the brain, but men don’t listen. They don’t give careful attention to what is being said. They miss the point. They don’t process it or quickly forget. They are functionally deaf. We all know the results of this: missed anniversaries, miscommunication and misunderstandings, statements of, “When did you say that? This is the first time I’ve heard that!”
Exodus 17:1-7 1 Corinthians 9:24-10:5 Matthew 20:1-16 In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. Imagine a Mediterranean country. About the latitude of the southern U.S. where retired Canadians go in winter to escape the chill. It’s warmed, evened out, moderated by a great big sea that makes it lovely and fairly even keeled year round. Just as lake Superior warms us up a few degrees in the winter and cools us down a few degrees in the summer.
