Readings: Genesis 14:8-23; Hebrews 7:1-10; John 8:53-58

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Today we hear of Abram, leader of a crack commando unit, who in the middle of the night dawned their night vision goggles and took out the combined forces of 4 great kings. All to rescue his nephew Lot. In faith Lot came with Uncle Abram from their home land for his own father was dead. Abram was likely a father to him after his father died. But let us assume that Lot heard the call unto faith that the Holy Spirit placed on Abram (Gen. 12:1-3; 2 Pet. 2:6-9), so that Lot followed Abram to the land promised to Abram. (Gen. 12:4) However, once in the land, Lot followed after the desires of the flesh. Both men’s herds grew too big to remain together. (Gen. 13:5-7) So Abram said to Lot, “Do you want over here or over there?” (Gen. 13:8-9) And Lot saw the greener grass on one side and said, “I’ll take this way.” (Gen. 13:10-11) And so for want of greener grass he got ensnared in the wickedness of the cities of that area: Sodom and Gomorrah. (Gen. 13:12-13) When those cities rebelled against their ruling king and were thus attacked by their ruler and his allies, they weren’t up to the task. They were crushed and Lot was taken captive. (Gen. 14:1-7)

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Abram believed God and God charged it to his account as justification. (Gen. 15:6) Which means God legally credited Abram with justification or legally declared guilty-as-sin Abram not guilty. God wrote it down in His heavenly ledger, in the Lamb’s book of life: Abram is righteous. Not because he was by his own works. After all, remember Abram’s history...

Readings: Job 1:1-2:10; 19:23-27; 2 Timothy 2:11-13; Matthew 16:24-26

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Suffering. It is easy to believe in a gracious God when everything is good. But what about in the midst of suffering? In the loss of loved ones? The loss of a job, property, your life-savings, or economic collapse? What about when your health is crumbling? That’s when the rubber hits the road. Do you still believe at that moment? Those are the moments of truth, of testing, to see what is true. Though, if we are to be honest, in our day our unparalleled good-life—in terms of being relatively free from the basic suffering of previous generations because of unprecedented wealth, a stable and cheap food supply, better nutrition, better medicine, better health, longer life—our ease of life means that we are constantly tempted to unbelief by our comfort. (Rev. 3:15-19) And if not unbelief, than certainly boredom with God, what previous generations would have called acedia or sloth, a disinterest in holy things. In that case a little suffering is good for the soul. For it drives you to your Lord. It turns you from your preoccupation with yourself and how well “actualized” you are, or how you can’t figure out why you are numb to life, bored. Suffering actually brings things into focus. It causes you to cry out to the Lord. It exposes your heart and whether there is any faith in the Lord left there. As your physical hardship or struggles with temptation force you to turn to Him.

Readings: Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 2:1-8, 14, 16-17, 21; John 14:23-27

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Noah and his sons emerged from the ark. God repeated His blessing and command given to Adam and Eve (Gen. 1:28) three times (Gen. 8:17; 9:1, 7), “Be fruitful and multiply and the fill earth. Make it a paradise of those who walk with God, who trust in Him who will send His Son born of human flesh to crush the works of the serpent. (Genesis 3:15; 4:1)” But it doesn’t take long—just the space of four generations (Gen. 10:6-10)—for unbelief to take hold, for the great-grandson of Noah to not walk with the Lord in faith. But rather to lift himself up (Gen 10:9-11). To turn to himself and his own works. To build a city to make his own name great on the earth (Gen. 11:4).  Rather than walking with (Gen. 6:9) and calling upon the name of Him (Gen. 4:26) whose Son will save all mankind from sin and death.

Readings: Genesis 8:1-9:17; 1 Peter 3:20-21; Luke 17:21-22, 26-27

In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

A sigh of relief! The Flood is over. Last week we held our breath as we heard of the wickedness of man. A wickedness so great it required God to judge the earth and start over. A wickedness so familiar to each of us we can’t hear of this event and not cringe, for it strikes too close to home. By a great flood of water the Triune God blotted out sin from the face of the earth. But now it is over. God remembers His promises. (Gen. 8:1) He sends a wind—His breath, His Spirit—on the earth. (Gen. 8:1-3) It closes up the fountains of the deep. It shuts the windows of heaven. The waters recede. So that just as at beginning (Gen. 1:2), and even now (Matt. 3:16-17; Titus 3:5-6; Ac. 2:38), the Spirit of God hovers over the water, bringing forth a new creation from the waters.
